Wheel Hum, Increasing with Speed
A constant hum or whine that clearly depends on the car's speed is a common symptom, usually indicating problems with rotating parts of the suspension. Ignoring this sign is not an option, as it can lead to wheel lock-up while driving.
Likely causes — most common first
Wheel Bearing Wear
Most often, the hum occurs due to the destruction of the inner balls or rollers of the bearing (the part that ensures smooth wheel rotation) due to natural wear or water ingress. As speed increases, the sound turns into a smooth hum, which often changes when turning the steering wheel.
Lack of Lubrication due to Wheel Hub Seal Wear
Damage or wear to the seal (rubber gasket) leads to lubricant leakage from the hub. Without lubrication, the bearing starts to overheat, making a humming or crunching noise and quickly deteriorating.
Uneven Tyre Tread Wear
This can happen due to incorrect wheel alignment (toe-in or toe-out), faulty shock absorbers, or driving with incorrect tyre pressure. The tread wears out in steps, creating a hum very similar to a faulty bearing.
Brake Pad or Caliper Issues
If the brake caliper (the mechanism that presses the pads against the disc) is stuck and does not release fully, the pad constantly rubs against the disc. This creates additional noise and hum, increasing with speed, and is accompanied by wheel overheating.
